  1. When it gets too hot in the desert, some desert birds take shelter in cacti. Not only are they kept cool, they also get drinking water from the flesh. Outer coverings of insects, reptiles and arachnids are waterproof to reduce water-loss. For some animals, their breathe increases the humidity in their burrow, which further reduces water-loss. Seeds in their burrow also help soak up the water vapour in the air. Some animals have kidneys that can extract water from food. Some birds fly far to find water, and when they do, they store it and bring it back to the nest. To get water, a beetle will climb high to collect dew on its back, and the Australian mouse also adopts this technique, with pebbles instead. For plants, the champion water storer is the cactus. They have wide and shallow root systems to collect water. Their leaves are also replaced with spines to reduce water loss.

  2. The desert contains many different animals who have many different ways of coping with lack of water. Some ways include flying to search for water and using their feathers to store water or using their bodies to condense water.

  3. When it gets too hot in the desert, some desert birds live in holes in cacti to keep cool and get water. The animals do not waste water by letting moisture escape through their waterproof skin. The animals reduce evaporation from their skin,do not perspire, their urine is highly concentrated, seeds make water stores, extracting water from their food.Other animals find water and transport it back to their home for their young. Some use condensation to obtain water.Plants like cacti store water and have wide roots to obtain water and spines to reduce water loss and repel animals.
